Be Prepared

Be Prepared for your Expedition

The best way to be safe on a expedition, and avoid any emergencies, is to “Be Prepared”.

Once a crew arrives at camp there is not much the Guide can do to prepare a crew beyond how they arrive.  If you arrive out of shape, your Guide cannot fix your difficulty in breathing.  If you arrive in tennis shoes, rather than waterproof hiking boots, your Guide can only wish you luck.  If you bring $1.00 raingear, your Guide can only let you know what dangers you have put yourself and the crew in.  Come prepared!  The nature of high adventure is such that danger is always present, so we reserve the right to refuse access to the program to persons who are grossly ill prepared.

While coming prepared greatly lowers the risk of injury, it does not remove the risk.  The weather, long medical response time, and hard physical exertion put all participants at risk.  Dehydration, heat stroke, hypothermia and a number of other medical emergencies are always a possibility; they can generate discomfort, long- and short-term, bodily injury, and even death.  Your Oyo High Adventure Guide will instruct you on how to avoid illness and injury, and how to have a safe and enjoyable time, so listen up—your life could depend upon it.  The Guide is the total authority in an emergency situation.  It is imperative that you follow directions and assist in any way possible.

There is great power behind the Scout motto—Be Prepared!  Make sure you have quality raingear, boots, and sleeping bags.  A Gear checklist is provided to assist you in that preparation; call if you have questions, rather than show up without necessary items.  Each individual is responsible for his physical and mental preparation.  Not doing so puts the entire crew at risk.
