Camp OyoMap to location

The Simon Kenton Council is offering three sessions of the National Youth Leadership Training. Each course will instruct the participants in advanced leadership skills based on the National BSA Syllabus, and The Youth Leadership Training Continuum.
NYLT is a 6-day experience based on the activities of a typical unit during a month of program. The course is a combination of classroom and practical exercises, all taught by a youth-led staff, modeling the best in leadership skills, using the teaching E.D.G.E.
The course is about vision based team building with a wide variety of fun and challenging activities.
The experience provides an opportunity for the participant to meet and develop teams from Crews and Troops from all over the Council’s diverse membership. This experience should model those times in scouting, school and future activities where it is required to form working teams from complete strangers, and accomplish leadership training activities, having fun while making permanent friends.
To qualify for this exciting training, a Scout must be First Class, 13 years of age, and recommended by his Scoutmaster. A Venturer must have equivalent outdoor skills and be approved by their unit leader. All participants should have had at least one long term camping experience and be comfortable living in the outdoors at a camp setting. We expect participants to abide by the Scout Oath and Law, governing all behavior. We expect participants to make decisions based on the principals of the Boy Scout programs, as well as those skills they will be taught as part of the NYLT PROGRAM.
Find out what it means to BE, to KNOW, and to DO leadership skills for life!

What Is Training?

The leadership training philosophy of the BSA is to provide adult leaders with fundamental information about its aims and purposes, as well as specifics about their particular roles in Scouting.

A trained leader is knowledgeable and confident in the role being performed. This knowledge and confidence is quickly sensed by the Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Varsity Scouts, and Venturers they work with. Trained leaders are better equipped to deal with their roles, more enthusiastic about the program, more effective at providing a quality program, and more inspirational to those with whom they come into contact. Trained leaders have more fun, serve more youth, and better retain the youth they serve. Trained leaders are better able to learn about and use effectively all the resources of the Boy Scouts of America to deliver exciting programs that also incorporates the values of BSA.

The aim of the Simon Kenton Council Training Committee is to provide all leaders with fundamental information about the Scouting movement and specific information relating to the role to which they have volunteered. Leaders need training as soon as possible in the best situation available. We strive to make this happen using a continuum of orientation training, child abuse prevention training, specific leadership training and ongoing training opportunities.

The BSA training program meets the needs of leaders by providing learning opportunities related to each of the adult unit positions. The plan allows for both individual and group training experiences. It also incorporates a recognition program that motivates and rewards those who progress in the leadership training programs of the Boy Scouts of America.

Training Continuum - The BSA Training Continuum provides volunteer leaders with a seamless transition from one program to the next, with little repetition in content and much flexibility in presentation and scheduling.

When Joining Scouting

The BSA requires Youth Protection training for all registered volunteers. New leaders are required to complete Youth Protection training before they can become a registered leader. To take the training online, leaders go to MyScouting and establish an account using the member number received when registering for BSA membership. If the training is taken online before obtaining a member number, volunteers are encouraged to return to MyScouting and enter their number for training record credit.

Simon Kenton Council desires that all leaders be trained within the first 3 months of registration. Many required courses are available in the E-Learning center. Opportunities for in-person training are available throughout the year and can be found on these pages.

Important Adult Training Record Collection: In an effort to update Council training records, we want to make certain that individual training records are complete. If you have taken a training that is not reflected in your training record in ScoutNet, please fill out and print the attached form. Training Record Update
