Summer camp is an exciting time for Scouts. We get to play outdoors, learn about
Camping,Ecology,Shootingsports, living history just to name a few.this is a great opertuntioy
to learn new skills and hone the one you allready have. Oh yeah, and we get to go
camping for an entire week! That’s why choosing the right summer camp is incredibly
important, and we’re here to give you some reasons why Camp Falling Rock is right for you.
Maybe you’re looking for that one week a year you can lay back in a tent and enjoy
nature without the hassle of everyday life. We’ve got programs for you, if you’re
looking to learn a lot and complete a lot of requirements for advancement. We’ve
got programs for you, too. Maybe you’ve been to a lot of summer camps before, and you
want something more extreme then try Foxfire or the RockRangers. Or maybe you aren’t so
into the nature, and you would rather learn about science and technology. We understand,
and we’ve got programs for you as well.
Summer camp isn’t just about the Scouts having fun and learning. Our program
offers many opportunities for our “over-18 youth” to get out there and enjoy the fresh air.
We offer special adult training courses, adult recreation programs every day, and we never
mind if you want to sit in on a class and learn something new. Don’t think we forgot about
you! You expect a lot out of your summer camp experience. That’s why here at Camp
Falling Rock we’re determined to give you that rock solid summer camp experience with
many memories and tons of bad puns. We guarantee you won’t go home disappointed.
Changes from 2013
Just like last year, we’ve listened to your feedback, and we’re trying to implement
more new features to make our programs even more enjoyable. Here are some changes we’re
working on, and we’ll keep updating this guide as the details come together.
• More improvements to our Foxfire Program

• Cooking is moving back to Scoutcraft to accommodate more participants (full-time
Foxfire pioneers will still earn Cooking throughout their week)
• Larger selection of camping gear and gadgets in the trading post
• Possible changes to the Brownsea (first-year program) schedule to allow scouts to
attend Instructional Swim times. and a score card to trak acomplishments of the

Aquatics: Lakefront Camp Falling Rock is proud to have its own man-made lake. We offer several boating
merit badges as well as Kayaking BSA. If you don’t really feel like learning something, you
can always come down and head out on the lake during our many open boating sessions.
All scouts and adult leaders who wish to participate in any of our aquatic activities
must take and pass a BSA swim test. No exceptions will be made. We offer the opportunity
to pass the test when troops first enter camp on Sunday as well as during any of the
instructional swim times. If neither of these works for you, just ask one of our helpful staff
members, and they will work with you to arrange the test.

• NOTE: Aquatics merit badges (lakefront and pool) all require knowledge of water
sports-related first aid. Since these requirements tend to overlap, we will be offering
special water first aid sessions every day after lunch at the hill by the pool. You only
need to attend one of these to be signed off for all water merit badges you are taking.
Aquatics: Pool The pool is one of the most popular areas in camp, especially on hot summer days.
Our pool at camp is located in the middle of our parade field, almost as central to the camp as

you can possibly be. Located next to the pool are our shower houses and a volleyball court, if
either of those suits your interests as well.
All scouts and adult leaders who wish to participate in any of our aquatic activities

• Swimming MB is offered at 9, 10 and 11 a.m.
• Lifesaving MB is offered at 9 and 10:30 a.m.
• BSA Lifeguard is a one-week program that runs from 9 a.m. to noon and 2 to 5 p.m.
every day, as well as some additional time to practice.
• Instructional swim is offered at 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday. We usually help
people complete Second Class and First Class requirements as well as helping others
work towards passing their BSA swim test, but we can help anybody become a better
swimmer or even learn to swim for the first time.
• Snorkeling BSA is also offered at 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
• The Mile Swim BSA award is earned on Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. We strongly urge
people to practice throughout the week in preparation.
• Open swim occurs from 3 to 5 p.m. every day as well as 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday and
Thursday. Friday afternoon’s open swim will be a festive Hawaiian luau with lots of
competitions and a chance for some prizes!
• Adult leader only free swim occurs from 5 to 5:30 p.m. every day.
• Safety Afloat and Safe Swim certifications are offered from 10 a.m. to noon on

Archery Our archery range is located just off the rifle range, and our 8 available stations ensure
all shooters the amount of time they need to fulfill all merit badge requirements. Our new
action archery course will provide some exciting new experiences for you, too. We also offer
several open shooting times for everyone to get involved.

• Archery Merit Badge is offered at 9 a.m., 10 a.m., 11 a.m., and 2 p.m.
• Archery merit badge costs $5 for an arrow kit and bowstring materials.
• Open shooting times are 3-5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday
and Thursday.
• Throughout Tuesday people will have a chance to sign up for an action archery course
later that night. Located in the Back 40, this event will take your archery experience
to a whole other level of excitement. No cost.
The Brownsea Island Adventure The Brownsea Island Adventure is a specialized program for scouts who are in their
first year of scouting, often having just crossed over from cub scouting, though first year
scouts of all ages are encouraged to participate in the program. The program is built around
the idea that rather than focusing on just completing requirements, a scout should be well
trained in their skills, and the completion of rank requirements is only part of the adventure.
Our Brownsea program consists of 4 hours of scheduled program each day, two in the
morning and two in the afternoon. We believe that the first year a scout attends summer
camp will set a precedent for the rest of his scouting career, so we want our first-year
campers to explore as much of camp as possible. During program time, Brownsea participants
will go to different program areas in small patrols led by one of our Brownsea staff. In these
areas, Brownsea scouts will work on different scouting skills including fire-making,
swimming, first aid, pioneering, and others.
On Thursday afternoon our Brownsea scouts take a five-mile hike across camp,
ending at their outpost location for the night. On outpost, they have the chance to cook their
own food and have a great time away from the main camp. Friday morning they pack
everything back up and come back to the main camp to participate in our polar bear swim.
At the end of the week, hard-working Brownsea scouts will walk away with a strong
foundation in basic scouting skills, several requirements from Tenderfoot to First Class, and
a merit badge or two to go along with it. Each Brownsea Scout will have a scoardard listing
the acoplishmenst of the week.

• Outpost – where scouts take a five mile hike ending at a campsite near the lake where
we will cook our own dinner over the fire and spend the night playing games and
sleeping under the stars.

CFR Laboratories is a new program designed after the Boy Scouts’ STEM initiative.
We offer science and technology merit badges in a lab setting with lots of cool experiments
and hands-on learning.

Climbing/Rappelling Program Falling Rock is fortunate to have a natural rappelling site as well as a 40+ foot
climbing/rappelling wall. To provide a varied experience to the Scouts, the cliffs will be used
for rappelling only on Thursday. The wall will be open on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday,
and Friday for climbing and rappelling.
All participants must use camp climbing/rappelling equipment. NO personal gear is

• Climbing merit badge is offered from 10 a.m. to noon and from 2 to 4 p.m.
• Open climbing sessions are at 4 p.m. Monday through Friday as well as from 7 to 9
p.m. on Tuesday.
• On Thursday night, Climbing MB participants will be able to go on a
climbing/rappelling outpost with our climbing staff.
Rock Rangers
Ever had the urge to climb some of our natural rock walls on camp? Have you
pictured yourself racing across our winding nature trails on a mountain bike? And do you
like to get extreme? Our new Rock Rangers program aims to provide older scouts who may
be suffering from “the same old camp” burnout to have a more challenging and rewarding
experience while at camp. The program will be aimed at those campers who have been to
our camp for a couple of years or more and have “been there, done that”.
The program is a multi-angled one that includes hiking, camping, orienteering,
mountain biking, and climbing. It is geared to a second-year-type program that would go
beyond just fulfilling merit badge requirements. In order to join the Rock Rangers, campers
must have completed Climbing MB. Wilderness Survival MB is strongly recommended but
not required. This program costs $10.

First Aid First aid is a cornerstone of scouting. That’s why we have our own First Aid Officer
teach you these important skills. Located in our LDS shelter, this area is a great place to work
on some Eagle-required badges.

in Kiwanis lodge, not the LDS shelter.

Foxfire Trading Company
A truely uqniqe exsculseve probgram, Foxfire takes you back in time to explore
and live in the Ohio frontier when the land west of the Appalachian Mountains was a
vastly unexplored land with pristine forests and men who braved challenges from both
man and wild creatures. True and full immersion in the liveing history and life as a
frontiersman, Throughout your week at camp, our Foxfire program will continue to
adapt as the Revolutionary War breaks out and continues to unfold. Join us for an
interesting perspective on life in the late 18th century.
Foxfire trading Company is open to anybody who wants to learn about life on the
frontier. Between 10 a.m. and noon and between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., anybody who wants to
learn more about the frontier is welcome to join us and learn some exciting outdoor skills.
Scouts can also come down for fun and work on a forge, throw tomahawks, and learn more
about life on the frontier.

The Foxfire Experience
While we’re opening up Foxfire to more participants this year, we will continue to
offer an exciting camping experience for boys who want to spend the week with our
mountain men. Any boy over the age of 14 who is interested in roughing it, cooking for
themselves, and diving deeper into the skills of blacksmithing, pioneering, and trailblazing is
invited to camp with our Foxfire Staff and work towards Camp Falling Rock’s unique Foxfire
The cost of this program is an additional $30. Scouts who want to spend the week at
Foxfire will not only be given period-appropriate clothing and the full experience of life on
the frontier, but they will also be able to earn the Cooking and Metalworking merit badges in
the process. Metalworking will only be offered as part of our week-long Foxfire Experience.

Handicraft Camp Falling Rock offers an extensive arts program. Our Handicraft shelter is located
on the trail to the BrokenAx camp fire ring. Here we have open program hours, so scouts
can come at any time and work on a number of various art and/or craft project.

Nature/Ecology & Conservation Camp Falling Rock offers “nature” at its best. Our nature/ecology and conservation
area is where you can establish or strengthen your connection with nature. Come see what
indigenous species are spending the summer at the nature center. Determine which of our
“mounted critters” you might encounter around camp. While the open program offers 20
different merit badges, we would enjoy hearing about your “nature” experiences and adventures.

Rifle Range Falling Rock’s rifle range is located just past our climbing tower. We offer many
shooting stations to help a lot of scouts earn these popular badges. Rifle Shooting merit badge
is offered from 9:00-noon, and Shotgun Shooting is offered at 4:00. We dedicate the end of
the week towards working intently with the scouts who need to shoot a certain score for
their requirements. There are also open shooting times for anyone who enjoys these sports.
Tickets for ammunition can be purchased in the trading post.

• Tuesday and Thursday from 7-9 p.m. we offer open program area to anybody taking
the merit badge.
• Shotgun Shooting merit badge costs $25 as well as an additional $5 for 10 shots if not

• Monday night from 7-9 p.m. we hold a Scoutmaster black powder shoot. We invite all
adult leaders to join in the fun!
Scoutmaster Programs
Youth aren’t the only ones who attend our summer camp. At Falling Rock we strive
to ensure a positive camp experience for every one of our campers no matter how young they
are on the outside. Adult leaders are encouraged to take part in our many training
opportunities, and if that doesn’t suit your interests, we also have some fun activities that can
help relieve some of that stress.

• Safe Swim and Safety Afloat are offered Monday at 10 a.m.
• Climb On Safely is offered Wednesday after lunch.
• CPR training will be provided Tuesday night at 7 p.m. Certification costs $10, but
attending the training is free.
• Adult Leader Basic Training is offered at 10 a.m. every day. This is a course from the
BSA that all scoutmasters are required to complete.
• BSA Wilderness First Aid is a week-long course offered from 10 a.m. to noon and 2 to
4 p.m. every day (must attend both sessions each day). BSA now requires that a unit
have at least two leaders with Wilderness First Aid training in order to participate in
high adventure activities. The cost for the program is $60.
• The special programs will be offered at various times throughout the week. Listen to
the morning announcements at camp for more information.
Scoutcraft Our Scoutcraft area teaches scouts the fundamentals of Scouting and everything
related to living outdoors; with a strong influence of LNT, Knots, Ropework,and camping.
Located near the entrance of camp, this area is easily distinguishable by its large
pioneering projects. Our goal is to go beyond the basics of scouting and look more indepth
at abilities such as cooking and camping. Scoutcraft is an open-program area, so
scouts are encouraged to visit any time.

• For scouts interested in the Wilderness Survival badge, there is an outpost on
Thursday night. All you need is a tarp, water bottle, and pocket knife.
Counselor-in-Training Program:
One of the wonderful things about Simon Kenton Council Camps is that the vast
majority of the staff members are former campers. It is common for many Scouts, after
experiencing the friendship and dedication of our summer camp staff, to want to return for
additional weeks in camp and eventually become staff members themselves. A wellconstructed
counselor-in-training program maintains the quality of the camp staff. Over
ninety percent of the staff has gone through at least one year of this two-year program. We
have overhauled our CIT program this year to make it more fun and involved, not just free
labor. CITs will work with the Program Director, Commissioner and staff at program areas to
learn how to be an effective staff member themselves.
Scouts who are at least 14 years old as of June 1st are eligible to be CIT-As. This oneweek
program is a combination of a leadership training program and a behind-the-scenes
tour of camp. CIT-As will visit every program area over the course of the week and learn
about how each area works. There will also be some instruction on how to teach merit
badges effectively, as well as some hands-on work as teaching aides. The CITs also learn
about the aims and methods of scouting. Participating in initiative games or developing a
crazy and original name, flag, handshake and song with the other members of the CIT-A
patrol, scouts learn more about camp and about scouting. The cost for this one-week program
is $100.
Scouts, who are at least 14 years old as of June 1st and who have taken CIT-A, are
eligible for CIT-B. This one-week program builds on the training gained in CIT-A and gives
the scouts a chance to spend time in a program area of their choice, learning more of what it
would be like to work on staff. They will have a more in-depth experience in the instructor
role, even teaching some merit badges sessions. They are expected to set the example—not
only for the scouts and leaders of the troops in camp but also for the CIT-A’s. This time is an
excellent opportunity for these scouts to get an idea of where they would like to potentially
serve the next year as a staff member. Since it is a camp training program, it is also the last
time for many of these boys to experience camp without the responsibilities of being a camp
staff member. The cost for this one-week program is $100.
Scouts who are interested in becoming a part of the Counselor-in-Training program
should submit a CIT application to the Council Service Center by May 1st. Scouts may also
sign-up for a later session while they are at camp.
Advancement Records
Merit Badges:
Prior to arrival at camp, complete a merit badge record (“blue card”) for each merit
badge a scout wishes to earn. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide blue cards for every
merit badge every scout wishes to take, so you must provide your own. (We will try to have
some available in our trading post for scoutmasters to purchase, but blue cards are in short
supply around summer camp time. It’s best to purchase them in March or April.)
When you’re filling out blue cards, make sure that all information on the left side of
the form is complete and correct, including the scout’s name, unit number, merit badge, and
any requirements already completed (see image on next page). The unit leader should sign
the form, indicating approval for the scout to work on the merit badge. The scoutmaster
should bring all blue cards to the meeting with area directors on Sunday night so that they
can have their rosters prepared for Monday morning. The merit badge instructor retains the
record while the Scout works towards the merit badge, making note of the requirements
Simon Kenton Council camps use a special merit badge requirement tracking sheet
due to the volume of merit badges being worked towards by scouts. On this, the merit badge
instructor keeps track of attendance and completed requirements. You can speak to the
program area directors at any time if you’re curious about how your scouts are coming along
in their badges. On Friday afternoon, the merit badge instructor completes all merit badge
records and master rosters. The merit badge records are sorted into the unit’s advancement
packet for distribution after closing campfire. The master roster is submitted to the camp
office and kept on file at the Council service center for one year.

Rank Requirements:
Our camp staff provides instruction in the particular skills, but we will not sign for
requirements in a Scout’s handbook. The unit determines the point at which a Scout
“completes” a requirement, and unit leader signs the Scout’s book. The first-year camper
program does provide a signed record to the unit stating requirements worked on in the
program. This is distributed in the unit’s advancement packet upon checkout.
Other Awards:
Records for awards such as BSA Lifeguard, Mile Swim, Snorkeling BSA, Totin’ Chip,
etc., will be generated by the camp staff. Completed records will be part of the unit’s
advancement packet.
Flexible and Structured Scheduling
You will notice that many merit badges fall under flexible scheduling (noted by the
word “Open” on the tentative schedule). This is designed to meet the needs of individual
scouts by eliminating large classes and concentrating on more personal instruction. Scouts
will be able to work at their own pace without the constraints of block schedules and the
individual needs of many other scouts. A few program areas (such as aquatics) have retained
a more rigid schedule. This is primarily due to safety concerns and limited resources. The
structured schedule classes are especially helpful for boys who like working in a class-type
setting with other people or who need some help getting motivated to work on badges.
Here’s how flexible scheduling works:
Scouts may come to work on a badge at any time during the open period – just walk in
and talk to the instructor. For future sessions, scouts should come back at a time mutually
agreeable with the instructor or the same time each day. Usually, scouts will find themselves
working in small groups, rather than in large classes. Scouts will be able to join sessions in
progress, and then catch up on what they missed prior to arrival after others leave. Session
length will vary and depend on the subject and the scout’s knowledge of the subject. In
planning individual scout’s schedules, you may want to allow 45 minutes to an hour for each
badge. Requirements that scouts are very familiar with will be completed very quickly.
Scouts will receive additional instruction in those areas of a badge where they are struggling
or have little knowledge. Scouts may begin work on additional badges mid-week if they find
they have extra time. If a particular session or area is very busy, ask the instructor if there is a
better time to try to come back.
Flexible scheduling exists to accommodate those scouts who work best at their own
pace. Scouts will no longer have to worry about rushing all the way across camp from one
class to the next. Scouts should be able to plan their journey across camp more accordingly.
Make enough copies of the camp schedule for each scout, each patrol, and each troop
leader. Using the camp schedule, block out times for troop wide activities. This is your troop
schedule. Next, have patrols block out time for activities the patrol members are going to do
together. This is their patrol schedule. The open blocks (the free time) remaining on a scout’s
schedule defines the time that he has to pursue his personal camp goals and activities. This is
the scout’s schedule.
If a scout finds a conflict between a troop or patrol program obligation and his
personal schedule, he should ask the camp staff member he is working with on his personal
program for possible solutions. The camp staff is usually flexible and accommodating.
Scouts will receive credit only for the requirements that they actually complete at
camp. Counselors will be happy to review requirements completed before camp to help a
Scout finish a badge. Please see the Camp Falling Rock prerequisites list for information on
which requirements should be completed before attending camp.
Here’s how structured scheduling works:
Some merit badges are harder to offer at camp than others, but we want to make sure
we provide many different opportunities for the scouts. These merit badges become possible
to offer in a structured schedule. Our instructors can handle larger groups with the resources
we have available, so many of our most popular merit badges fall into a set time.
Some scouts may do better by signing them up for classes in a structured schedule.
They can be held accountable for getting their requirements done. Some scouts also
appreciate the planned classes because it helps them focus on the material.
To sign up for a structured-schedule class, the scout should approach the program
area director on Sunday night during our Merit Badge Midway, which is a chance to explore
camp and learn about our different program areas. The program director will be prepared for
them at class the next day. If they can bring their blue card to the instructor that night, even
If you miss the opportunity to speak with the area director Sunday night, we would
still love for you to show up Monday with your blue card. The instructor can put you right in
the class, and you’re ready to go.

of America. Visited annually by a team knowledgeable and trained in camping standards,
our camps maintain a top rating for their facilities, programs, and staff. Rules for acceptance
and participation in the programs are the same for everyone without regard to race, color,
age, handicap, or national origin.
