2008 Fall Recruitment Information


Blue Jackets Promotions

The Columbus Blue Jackets and the Chiller Ice Rinks are partnering with Simon Kenton Council this fall to help recruit new Scouts.

In the fall of 2008 the Columbus Blue Jackets will host Simon Kenton Council at special "Skate into Scouting" evenings. At these events Scouts and a member of their family will be able to attend a pre-season Columbus Blue Jackets game at no cost.

In addition, all Scouts will be invited to participate in quarterly "Skate Nights" at area Chiller Ice Rinks and have opportunities to work on the ice skating belt loop and sports pin. Newly recruited Scouts will also receive a cool "Skate into Scouting" patch.

Tips For a Successful Fall Recruitment

Planning and Promoting

  • Schedule your sign-up event early!
  • Order your sign-up event flyers as soon as your date is confirmed
  • If possible, get permission for a Boy Talk in your school
  • Distribute flyers at school 1-2 weeks before your sign-up event and send out another flyer the day of the Boy Talk or sign-up event
  • Get permission to place yard signs around your neighborhood and hang posters at strategic locations
  • Hand out stickers at Boy Talks

Conducting a Sign-up Event

  • Decide the floor plan in advance
  • Consider having a sign-in/greeting table, den tables, checkout table, and a kids area to keep the boys entertained
  • Assemble all the materials in advance including parent information packets, applications and pens, and change
  • Be sure your treasurer attends and confirm the assistance of other leaders and parents
  • Decide what fees you are collecting in advance
  • Try to get applications filled out and signed at the event, but if a parent leaves without registering his son be sure to follow up with a phone call
